OUR HISTORY
The Penn Neuroscience Society was founded on November 29th, 2010 by Dara Bakar, a freshman at the time. Dara had completed a number of years of neuroscience research before matriculating at Penn and decided to share his avid interest in neuroscience with his fellow undergraduates by starting the society. Shortly after, Dara recruited Sibel Ozelik, Hallene Guo, Rachel Lee, Eric Kim, and Annie Nayak to establish the first board of the Penn Neuroscience Society. The board worked together to accomplish a variety of goals including refining the organization’s mission and goals, while trying to establish a greater presence in the West Philadelphia Community. The first General Body Meeting was held on January 23rd, 2011. Since then, the group has proliferated at an unprecedented rate as we have more members join us with each passing semester.
On March 2nd and 3rd, 2011 the group held its first significant fundraising event to raise money for Alzheimer’s research through a gourmet baked goods fundraiser sponsored by local restaurants and catering companies. After the success of its first fundraising event, the Society decided to pursue greater fundraising events in the following years. Since then, the Society has worked with many local and national sponsors to achieve its fundraising goals for Alzheimer’s research. Recent sponsors have included Kaplan, Inc. Test Prep, Au Bon Pain, Artisserie Chocolate Café, Bon Appetit Management Company, and Cosi.
On February 5th, 2012, the Penn Neuroscience Society ratified the organization’s constitution and submitted it to the University for approval. On February 13, 2012, more than a year after its initial founding, the Penn Neuroscience Society achieved a major landmark and was officially recognized by the Student Activities Council, thereby obtaining official funding from the University of Pennsylvania.
Currently, the Penn Neuroscience Society strives to provide a forum of discussion for today’s rapidly developing field of neuroscience. We seek to bring together undergraduate and graduate students who share an interest in learning about various types of neuroscience. We regularly host lectures and workshops by distinguished neurologists, neurosurgeons, and neuroscientists from across the country in addition to maintaining our fundraising campaign for Alzheimer’s research.
